چکیده

Cultures of Tritrichomonas augusta, generously provided by Professor William Balamuth, were grown in Diamond's medium (6) modified by omission of agar. Because the organisms are anaerobic, the culture tubes were sealed with a mixture of vaseline and paraffin to exclude oxygen. 4-day cultures were fixed for 2 hr at 4°C in 5% glutaraldehyde-2% acrolein in 0.1 M cacodylate buffer with a final pH of 7.3. The organisms were then washed for 2 hr in cold 0.2 M sucrose-0.1 M cacodylate buffer and postfixed for 2 hr in 2%o osmium tetroxide in 0.1 M cacodylate buffer at 4°C. They were dehydrated in ethanol followed by two changes of propylene oxide, embedded in Epon, sectioned with a diamond knife on a Porter-Blum MT 1 ultramicrotome, stained with aqueous uranyl acetate and Reynolds's lead citrate, and examined in an RCA EMU 3F electron microscope.

Basic properties of Tritrichomonas mobilensis hemagglutinin.

Tritrichomonas mobilensis is a recently described enteric protozoon of squirrel monkeys. An earlier report identified one of the metabolic products of this organism as a lectinlike hemagglutinin. Its further properties were determined in this study. Culture supernatants of T. mobilensis FP4190 were concentrated by ultrafiltration through a membrane with 100,000-molecular-weight cutoff. High tit...

Tritrichomonas foetus and not Pentatrichomonas hominis is the etiologic agent of feline trichomonal diarrhea.

Recently, several investigators have reported large-bowel diarrhea in cats associated with intestinal trichomonad parasites. These reports have presumptively identified the flagellates as Pentatrichomonas hominis, a n organism putatively capable of infecting the intestinal tracts of a number of mammalian hosts, including cats, dogs, and man. The purpose of the present study was to determine the...

Respiration of Hydrogenosomes of Tritrichomonas foetus

Hydrogenosomes of the anaerobic flagellate Tritrichomonas foetus can use oxygen as terminal electron acceptor in pyruvate metabolism. In particles broken with the detergent, Triton X-100 or by repeated freezing and thawing, pyruvate-supported respiration is greatly enhanced by coenzyme A. Additions of small amounts of CoA result in a phenomenon resembling respiratory control. ADP and GDP also h...

Hydrogenosome behavior during the cell cycle in Tritrichomonas foetus.

The hydrogenosome is an unusual organelle found in several trichomonad species and other protists living in oxygen poor or anoxic environments. The hydrogenosome behavior in the protist Tritrichomonas foetus, parasite of the urogenital tract of cattle, is reported here. The hydrogenosomes were followed by light and transmission electron microscopy during the whole cell cycle. Videomicroscopy, i...

Basic biological aspects of Tritrichomonas foetus of re-levance to the treatment of bovines suffering of tricho-moniasis

Tritrichomonas foetus is a flagellate protozoan and the etiological agent of bovine genital trichomoniasis [1], which is an infectious venereal disease. This parasite is usually found associated with the mucosal surface of the urogenital tract in females or the male preputial and penile membranes. In females, the clinical manifestations may include abortion, with repetition of estrus at irregul...
